A tree for young people

The green areas are a key element for the maintenance and improvement of the quality of environment. While keeping the ecological balance, they constitute a favourable ambiance absolutely necessary for the development of human activity and the perpetuation of the native genofond.

The Law of Republic of Moldova on green areas in urban and rural communities confirms the importance that should be given to this issue, and the country’s accession to the provisions of Kyoto Protocol and its ratification of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change prove that the country is open to prevent the dramatic consequences for the humanity and the promotion of responsibility for the environment. One of the requirements stipulated in the Protocol is the protection and expansion of forests and green areas.

As an active promoter of principles of corporate social responsibility in Moldova, and as a member of the coordinating council of the Global Compact local network, RED Union Fenosa, in cooperation with UNDP Moldova and the mayoralty of Calarasi, launched the project “A tree for young people”.

Under this project, actions were taken to rehabilitate a green area of 36 ares in Calarasi and to arrange a pilot site for open-air practical lessons for students and pupils.

In order to involve the local population and the young generation in an action for their own community,
Union Fenosa Company advertised in March 2008 a contest for projects aimed at land improvement, thus giving the participants the option to develop and to present graphically their vision about a future park, recreational and educational site.
